Our Craft Story at Tribes of Jaipur
At Tribes of Jaipur, every garment is a tribute to Rajasthan’s living craft traditions. Deeply rooted in Jaipur’s textile heritage, we work closely with local artisans who carry forward generations of hand skills. Each TOJ piece is the result of multiple crafts coming together—an interdependence of hands, time, and tradition.
From wood block carvers and master block printers to dyers and finishers, our textiles are created through a slow, intentional process. These layered hand techniques give our garments their distinctive character, depth, and soul—making every piece subtly unique.

The Block Printing Process
Block Carving – The Beginning of Every Print
The journey of a TOJ print begins with hand block carving, the foundation of all traditional block printing.
Our artisans start by selecting seasoned wood, which is carefully planed and sanded to achieve a perfectly smooth surface. The block is then coated with a chalk-based paste, allowing the design to be hand-traced with precision.
Using only traditional hand tools—without any electrical machinery—the carver painstakingly chisels the motif into the wood. This stage demands immense skill, patience, and experience. Depending on the intricacy of the design, a single block can take 5–7 days or more to complete.
These hand-carved blocks become the tools through which our stories are printed onto fabric—one impression at a time.

Why It Matters
Because every block is carved and printed by hand, no two TOJ pieces are ever exactly the same. Slight variations in print, colour, and alignment are not flaws, but signatures of human craftsmanship—a reminder that your garment is made slowly, ethically, and with care.
At Tribes of Jaipur, block printing is not just a technique—it is a tradition we preserve, celebrate, and bring into everyday contemporary wear.
